Over 1 million women use NuvaRing, a device that was FDA-approved in 2001. Merck and Organon, the manufacturers, marketed the device as a safer, more convenient alternative to birth control pills. However, they did not inform women of the serious health risks linked with these vaginal ring implants.

Medical experts – and the FDA – have issued warnings about these risks. Merck now faces litigation for failure to inform women of these serious NuvaRing side effects. A special federal multi-district litigation court has been established to handle the claims.

In the device’s safety information, Merck indicates side effects such asvaginitis, headaches, upper respiratory infection, sinusitis, nausea, vaginal discharge and weight gain.
However, recent studies have revealed more serious NuvaRing side effects, including:
The FDA has reported over 5,000 cases of adverse events caused by NuvaRing – most commonly, Pulmonary Embolism, Deep Vein Thrombosis and Irregular Bleeding.
In October 2011, an FDA study revealed that vaginal ring contraceptives could increase risk of these serious NuvaRing side effects up to 56%, compared with low-dose estrogen birth control pills.
Several prestigious medical journals presented similar findings. The British Medical Journal published a study from Denmark showing that vaginal rings like NuvaRing can increase blood clot risk up to 90%. Another report, in the New England Journal of Medicine, linkedNuvaRing side effects to a 2.5 to 3-fold increased risk of blood clots.
Recently unsealed court documents show Merck may have known these blood clot risks years ago, but did not warn patients. The litigation against Merck is mounting. Over 1,000 women have filed lawsuits, and lawyers are working with women who now realize they may have suffered side effects from NuvaRing.
